San Remo is mostly known for its benign climate and lovely beaches. However, the capital of the Italian Riviera, called the city of flowers accommodates a wealth of artistic heritage, which has somehow escaped the international focus of attention and is not very popular. Nevertheless, it is worth the attention. Actually, its sights are extremely evocative and its architecture and surroundings make the town a real gem of the Italian Riviera. The town sits on a strip of land near the French border. In the past, the town was called Matuzia probably after Caio Matuzio who had ancient patrician palaces built here. Another story argues that the town was built as a memorial of Matuta, Goddess of the sea and that the city derives its name from hers. Today, San Remo attracts well off tourists among which royalties, literates and scientists, who come here to take pleasure in the sea and flowers.
