That is how most European beach resorts operate, except for the public sections, which however are not a very pleasant place.

Bussana Vecchia

The lovely Bussana Vecchia is a hill-town, situated up the hills of San Remo. Deserted after an earthquake in 1877, which destroyed most of the houses, it was for over a century only a ghost town surrounded by beautiful flowers, grown mainly for export. Ruins of a church, a bell tower, and houses remained when the town was deserted. However, since the 1960 a colony of artists and artisans has moved continuously here and enlivened the place once again. Today, you can go up, stroll around, and enjoy the goods and wares of the local artisans and painters.
